Americans are obsessed with their bodies. We are constantly running to the gym or to our plastic surgeon; we willingly deprive ourselves of our favorite foods or suffer the pangs of guilt when we indulge in a cookie or a slice of pie. And yet we are constantly bombarded by ads for fatty, processed foods on T.V. and in magazines. We are the only society that judges people by their weight. When polled, teenage girls in America stated that they’d rather be
ugly than fat. Overweight teenagers are ridiculed at school and even cyber-bullied. Overweight adults don’t get the job or promotion. Another survey asked Americans what came to mind when they thought of chocolate; they replied “guilt”. Even people who are not overweight tend to feel guilty when they eat foods that are considered taboo.
